Ruth Roddy, RN, is the new Breast Care Specialist at the Battelle Breast Care Center. An employee at Madison County Hospital for 20 years, Ruth is a wonderful addition to MCH’s breast care services.
After attending Clark State Nursing School, Ruth started as a registered nurse in MCH’s operating recovery room and then outpatient clinics.
Having an interest in women’s health, Ruth has been a part of the hospital’s New Beginnings Prenatal Clinic since it started in 1989. Five years ago she became the clinic’s project director, whose duties include applying for grants, setting appointments, and working with patients.
“I’ve always had an interest in women’s health,” said Ruth. “It’s important that women have support and information when making decisions about their health.”
As the Breast Care Specialist, Ruth is available to assist patients before, during, and after the diagnostic and treatment process for breast cancer. She accompanies women to appointments, answers questions, and assists in evaluating various treatment options.
“I am another set of ears when the doctor is discussing options with a patient,” said Ruth. “I can offer support and help answer questions.”
Also, as the Breast Care Specialist, Ruth facilitates MCH’s Breast Cancer Support Group. The support group meets the third Wednesday of the month at 7 pm in the Park Avenue Medical Building.
Ruth also works at the Battelle Breast Care Center’s Breast Care Clinics. Supported by a grant from the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the clinics offer mammograms and breast exams at no out-of-pocket cost to patients. To schedule an appointment, call 740-845-7000 and ask for the “Breast Care Clinics.”
“It important that women understand the importance of early detection,” said Ruth. “Getting a mammogram is one of the best ways to protect yourself from breast cancer, and right now in Madison County, there should be no reason to not get screened.”
