Madison Press: Hospital sets opening date for additions
November 5, 2018
New additions to the Madison Health campus are just a month away from opening.

At the meeting of the Madison County Commissioners on Tuesday, Leanne Manring, Director of Oncology at the hospital, said the building will be open Dec. 3. Her department, the Cancer Center, is one of the new additions to the campus and will be located on the second floor.

“What’s great is that we’ve partnered with The James (Ohio State’s James Cancer Center in Columbus) to give as many resources to our patients locally as possible,” Manring said. “We needed a larger clinic, more accessible to our patients.”

The construction project, which began last year, brought the new Cancer Center and a new emergency department to the hospital, adding more than 20,000 square feet of structures to the grounds.

Although the new buildings were discussed at the Tuesday meeting, the primary focus of both Madison County health officials and the commissioners was a final push and reminder of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Health Commissioner Chris Cook informed the board of the effects of breast cancer locally.

“In Madison County, we have about 49 new cases every year,” Cook said. “Every year in the county we have about 13 deaths attributed to breast cancer.”

He said the numbers for diagnoses are in line with the number for the state averages but that in other counties in Ohio of similar size and demographics, the deaths are closer to 10.

Nearly 250,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the United States and Cook said that those numbers are a good reminder to be up on checking with doctors.

“About 75 percent of our residents get a mammogram sometime in the age of 50 and over,” he said. “We would actually like to see that trend a different way. We’d like to see that at 100 percent and we’d like to see people starting to get those at age 45.” He said that between 40 and 45, checks for breast cancer are option but that early detection is key.

“I think we’re really lucky to have something like Madison Health in the county because that gives people a great resource,” he added.
