Madison Health tree receives Heritage recognition
April 24, 2017

The Madison County Master Gardner Volunteers recently presented Madison Health officials with a plaque commemorating the 2016 Heritage Tree, a Burr Oak which is located on the organization’s main campus in London.

Nominated by retired surveyor, Rodger I. Baker, the tree is 18.5’ in circumference at 4.5’ from the base of the trunk and is almost 80’ tall. It sits on a survey line of the Virginia Military Survey (VMS) Land Division and was noted on a boundary line in the VMS in 1804, around ten years before the establishment of Madison County.

Baker noted that he recalls first being made aware of the tree as early as 1938, when a Civilian Conservation Corps camp existed on the site of the Madison County Fairgrounds.

The tree will not be impacted by Madison Health’s expansion and renovation project.

Each year on Arbor Day, the Master Gardeners in Madison County recognize one tree as a Heritage Tree.  Trees are selected among nominations which are based on age, size, history, access for public viewing and uniqueness.

According to their website, “The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Program is a premier statewide network of volunteer education and leadership development; as well as a consumer horticulture education delivery system that maximizes human, material, and natural resources, and values teamwork and excellence in educational programming.”

“Working with county Extension personnel, Master Gardener Volunteers provide such educational services to their communities as: answering gardening questions from the public; conducting plant clinics; gardening activities with children, senior citizens, or disabled persons; beautifying the community; and developing community or demonstration gardens.”
