Benefits of breastfeeding: By Michelle Khoury, DO
June 28, 2016

I wanted to share with the Madison County community a study that was recently published in Pediatrics because it was relevant to many parents of young children. A group in Texas watched babies for the first year and documented how many cases of ear infections the babies had.  It turned out that 46% of the babies had at least one ear infection by the time they reached 12 months of age.

Every parent wants to avoid the discomfort and inconvenience of watching their baby go through an ear infection.  We as doctors want to avoid overprescribing antibiotics to the babies.

This group identified one important way to reduce a baby's risk for getting an ear infection: breastfeeding.  We know that breastfeeding offers the baby and parents many benefits.  Breastfeeding is cheaper than formula and it also promotes a unique and intimate bond between a mother and her baby.  Breast milk is the perfect mix of nutrients for the baby to stay healthy.   We also know that breastfeeding decreases a baby's risk for getting an ear infection in the first year of life.  This is yet another benefit of breastfeeding to consider.

To read more about ear infections and breastfeeding you may look at the article in Pediatrics:

I can speak for myself and the other physicians at Madison Heath Primary Care of London, that we are all mothers who have breastfed our own children.  We are always willing to encourage and coach our patients to breastfeed their babies.
