Madison Health offers education to breastfeeding mothers
December 22, 2014
Thanks to a grant Ohio Lactation Consultant Association (OLCA), Madison Health was able to expand breastfeeding education to new mothers in 2014. According to the OLCA, their mission is to be the voice of Ohio lactation consultants in their efforts to transform society into a breastfeeding culture. To empower, support, and educate our membership enabling them to be articulate agents for change.
“One of the first and most important decisions a new mother will make for her baby is whether or not to breastfeed,” said Tracy Stewart, Director of Obstetrics at Madison Health. “Breastfeeding, according to most experts, offers superb nutrition as well as long term infant health and excellent bonding opportunities. Maternity nurses and lactation consultants play a key role in ensuring that breastfeeding families succeed. This grant has allowed Madison Health’s maternity nurses to obtain additional education so that every family choosing to breastfeed is successful.”
Madison Health offers a certified lactation consultant to offer support for breastfeeding mothers while in the hospital and at home. A lactation consultant provides personalized care and education for mothers and specializes in helping them learn to nurse, overcome difficulties while breastfeeding and how to safely pump and store breast milk.
Through natural antibodies, breast milk offers infants protection against certain illnesses, allergies and may reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfeeding can also lower the risk of common health problems such as ear infections, respiratory infections, stomach viruses, obesity, asthma and diabetes.
The advantages of breastfeeding extend to the mother as well. The risk for Type 2 diabetes is lowered along with breast cancer, ovarian cancer and postpartum depression.
