New Medical Director Named for Battelle Breast Care Center
June 17, 2009
Mitchell Spahn, M.D., OB/GYN, has been named the new Medical Director of the Battelle Breast Care Center at Madison County Hospital. Dr. Spahn also serves as the hospital’s Chief-of-Staff.

In his role as Medical Director, Dr. Spahn will be responsible for coordinating the strategic direction of the Battelle Breast Care Center. Dr. Spahn will act in an advisory capacity to physicians, administration and staff to implement and maintain outstanding quality standards for the center.

The Battelle Breast Care Center offers comprehensive breast care including screening mammography and diagnostic services. For breast cancer patients, the center also helps coordinate treatment services available locally, including surgery and oncology.

Fred Kolb, hospital CEO, praised the selection of Dr. Spahn as the new director. “Dr. Spahn brings a great deal of vision and experience in women’s health issues to the table. He understands the importance of providing first-class services here in our community, and will take the Battelle Breast Care Center in a new and exciting direction.”

Under Spahn’s leadership, the center will continue to focus on providing a wide range of screening, diagnostic and treatment services. Plans to add digital mammography and stereotactic biopsy equipment are already underway.

Combined with our existing sentinel node biopsy and breast MRI capabilities, the hospital offers state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities. “We also have excellent surgeons and oncologists on staff to provide breast cancer services,” according to Spahn.

Spahn and the staff of The Battelle Breast Care Center are committed to implementing new processes which can shorten the time between when a patient is diagnosed and treatment for breast cancer begins.

According to Spahn, “We have already taken a major step in that direction by providing a patient navigator, Sue Besinger, RN. Besinger, who is a specially trained RN, assists patients through screening, diagnosis, and if necessary, treatment. She can accompany them to physician visits, answer questions, and help schedule appointments. Dealing with breast cancer is extremely stressful, and our patients really appreciate the extra level of care Sue provides.”

Dr. Spahn joined the Madison County Hospital medical staff in 2000. He received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Spahn also serves on the hospital’s Board of Trustees and on the hospital’s Foundation board. As part of the Hospital Foundation leadership team, Dr. Spahn and his wife Sheri have been instrumental in helping raise over $1.2 million toward the hospital’s current breast cancer initiative.

“If a woman in Madison County can’t afford breast cancer treatment, the Hospital Foundation will see to it she gets the care she needs. This is just one example of why Sheri and I chose to live and work in a community like this that really cares for its own,” commented Spahn.

In addition to his leadership roles at MCH, Dr. Spahn works full-time at his practice, OB/GYN of London, located at 54 West High Street in London.
