At Madison County Hospital, more than 120 active volunteers dedicated more then 20,000 hours this past year to helping patients, visitors, and staff.

Each fall, they are acknowledged and thanked with an annual recognition luncheon. This year's luncheon took place on September 10, 2012, one day before the hospital's 50th anniversary.

"Our volunteers are so important to us," said Darla Bires, Volunteer Coordinator. "We have a long history of volunteer support and enjoy taking time to recognized them for their commitment to our community and the hospital."

MCH volunteers perform important jobs such as greeting patients and their families, managing the gift shop, assisting in administrative work, and delivering meals on wheels. They also help in various departments of the hospital including the wellness center, pharmacy, and lab. Without their dedication and support, MCH would not be able to provide such high quality care.

Among those recognized was Anne Carter who won the Jean Smith Award after volunteering 539 hours this past year. The Jean Smith Award recognizes the volunteer who has accumulated the most hours in one year and can only be received once.

Anne has been an MCH volunteer since July 3, 2006.  Since that time she has accumulated 1,619 volunteer hours. In addition to volunteering at the front desk and in Edie's Place, the hospital gift shop, Anne is the President of the Auxiliary and helps with their events such as the book and jewelry sales, Bake-nic, and Fall Fling.

Elsie Slagle won Centerpiece of the Day for her 4,811 hours of service. The Centerpiece of the Day is awarded to the volunteer with the most accumulated hours over the years and can only be received one time. Elsie started volunteering at MCH in November of 1962.
