Include Mammograms in your New Year's Resolution
January 14, 2011
Most New Year's resolutions involve some promise to get healthy, whether that means losing a few pounds or dusting off your walking shoes in an effort to get fit.
Unfortunately, despite our good intentions, most of us won't reach our New Year's resolution goals.
This year make a resolution you can keep by scheduling your annual mammogram.
"Scheduling a quick 10-15 minute mammography exam is an easy way to keep yourself healthy in 2011," said Ruth Roddy, RN, breast care specialist.
Mammography is the best screening tool used today for the early detection of breast cancer. Both Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the American Cancer Society recommend mammograms and clinical breast exams every year for women beginning at age 40.
The Battelle Breast Care Center at Madison County Hospital offers both the latest in digital mammography and clinical breast exams.
In fact, the Battelle Breast Care Center now has two certified breast examiners as both Ruth and Stefanie Cunningham, mammographer, have completed the requirements to become Certified MammaCare Clinical Breast Examiners.
MammaCare is the recognized standard for teaching and performing clinical breast examination in breast cancer screening clinics.
“I would like to congratulate both Ruth and Stefanie on their achievement,” said Dr. Mitchell Spahn, medical director of the Battelle Breast Care Center. “Having two members of our Battelle Breast Care Center staff who can give clinical breast exams and teach self-breast exams is a great resource to our patients.”
Ruth and Stefanie were able to attend the certification course thanks to a travel grant from The Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Through breast care clinics, digital mammograms and clinical breast exams are currently available at no out-of-pocket cost to patients thanks to a generous grant from The Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
For all digital mammogram appointments, call central scheduling at (740) 845-7100. Please refer to the “Breast Care Clinic," if you are interested in one of the clinic appointments.
